The Doumbek plays a central role in both popular and classical Middle Eastern music and is often heard in ensemble with the riq and the tar. The name of the instrument derives from its distinctive sound: ?doum? (the open bass sound) produced by striking the drum in the middle of the head, and ?bek? (the high, sharp, closed sound) produced by striking the drum at the edge of the head.
